By Prof. Imran Ismail Chohan M.Phil. in Applied Linguistics

Introduction

Chaudhry Rehmat Ali, a big name among Muslim nationalists in the Indian subcontinent, had some pretty groundbreaking ideas that played a huge role in the birth of Pakistan. He’s famous for coming up with the name “Pakistan”, which is now the identity for millions of Muslims in South Asia. Even though he wasn’t the front-runner in politics like Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, his smart ideas and beliefs really shaped the Pakistan Movement for the long haul.

Early Life and Education

Chaudhry Rehmat Ali popped into the world on November 16, 1897, in Balachaur, which is in the Hoshiarpur district of Punjab, now part of India. He was from a Gujjar family and got his early schooling in his home town. Later, he hit up Islamia College Lahore, where he got super into politics and the whole Muslim rights scene in the subcontinent. he decided to go for higher studies, so he packed his bags and headed to the UK, landing a spot at the University of

Cambridge to dive into law studies.

The Concept of Pakistan

While studying in England, Chaudhry Rehmat Ali got really worried about what was going to happen to Muslims in India politically He was worried that if India was one country with everyone voting, Muslims might end up losing their unique culture, beliefs, and say in things.

back in January ’33, he dropped his famous pamphlet “Now or Never; Are We to Live or Perish Forever?” where he first brought up the name Pakistan the term came from the names of the Muslim-majority areas, like it was an acronym or something

P – Punjab

Afghania, the place now known as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, was once the North-West Frontier Province.

K – Kashmir S – Sindh

Tan – Balochistan

the name was cool too, it meant “Land of the Pure” in Persian, which was kinda awesome both in words and as a symbol

Major Contributions

  1. Authoring the Pakistan Declaration (1933)

His pamphlet “Now or Never”, also known as the Pakistan Declaration, was a game-changing political document. it didn’t just bring up Pakistan’s name, but also made the case that Muslims were a distinct group deserving their own country

2.  Founding the Pakistan National Movement (PNM)

While he was in Cambridge, he set up the Pakistan National Movement to push for the idea of Pakistan. this was the first official group all about setting up a Muslim country

3.  Proposing a Confederation of Muslim States

His vision stretched way beyond the current state of Pakistan he suggested a bunch of Muslim-friendly places in South Asia, like

Bangistan (Bengal Muslims)

Osmanistan (Hyderabad Deccan Muslims)

Siddiqistan, Farooqistan, Haidaristan (other Muslim-majority regions)

4.  Emphasizing Muslim Identity and Nationalism

Rehmat Ali repeatedly emphasized that Muslims were a unique nation, not just a religious minority, with their own culture, history, and political needs.

5.  Raising International Awareness

Living in England, he used his platform to spread awareness about the Muslim cause in India, writing letters to British politicians, intellectuals, and newspapers.

6.  Vision for Post-Independence Pakistan

He pictured Pakistan as a robust, Islamic, and contemporary nation, run with fairness and equality. even though he later wasn’t happy with the leaders straying from his ideas, his dreams still shaped the country’s big goals for the future.

Later Life and Death

After Pakistan popped up in ’47, Chaudhry Rehmat Ali went there but got super disappointed with the leaders. He came back to England and lived there, kind of out of the spotlight.

He kicked the bucket on 12 February 1951 in Cambridge, and he’s now resting there.

Legacy

Chaudhry Rehmat Ali was awesome at defining what the Muslims in India wanted, giving them a solid identity by calling out Pakistan and laying out what it’s all about, he gave the freedom fight a solid focus His bigger ideas for Muslim countries in South Asia really showed he cared a lot about keeping Islamic traditions and political freedoms safe there. today, he’s known as a big thinker whose ideas totally changed the lives of millions

Even though Chaudhry Rehmat Ali wasn’t in politics or leading big protests, his smart ideas were super key in making Pakistan happen His pamphlet called “Pakistan,” and his never-ending push for Muslim countries to stand on their own, are still big reminders of his dedication to the idea of Muslim countries being independent. his legacy keeps on motivating folks who think ahead,

know who they are, and believe in the strength of ideas
