Islamabad-(Mudassar Iqbal/Webdesk)-United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed his heartfelt sorrow over the devastating floods in Pakistan and India, which have claimed hundreds of lives and displaced countless families. In his official message, Guterres offered condolences to the victims’ families and assured that the UN stands in solidarity with those affected.
According to a statement from his spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, the UN chief confirmed that UN country teams in both Pakistan and India are fully prepared to support local governments in emergency relief and recovery operations.
In Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province alone, at least 323 people have lost their lives due to heavy rainfall and flash floods. A report by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) revealed that among the victims were 273 men, 29 women, and 21 children. More than 150 others have been injured, while hundreds of houses have been destroyed or severely damaged.
The district of Buner has been the hardest hit, recording more than 200 deaths. Other impacted areas include Swat, Bajaur, Torghar, Mansehra, Shangla, and Battagram. Authorities have warned of further monsoon spells, with a 50 percent increase in intensity expected. The Meteorological Department has also predicted risks of cloudbursts in Rawalpindi, Murree, and surrounding areas, alongside urban flooding in Lahore and other major cities.

In response, the provincial government has dispatched 89 relief trucks carrying tents, bedding, food supplies, and essential items. Relief funds of over Rs1.3 billion have been allocated to support recovery, with Buner receiving special assistance due to the scale of destruction.
The UN chief’s timely assurance brings hope to communities struggling with the crisis, as rescue and relief operations continue across the affected regions.
