Nation Commits To Protecting Minorities On Special Day

Aug 11 Speech Inspires Hope For Pakistan’s Minorities

Political leaders across Pakistan on Sunday observed National Minorities Day, renewing their pledge to safeguard the constitutional, social, and economic rights of non-Muslim citizens in line with the vision of the nation’s founder, Muhammad Ali Jinnah. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said protecting minority rights is both a constitutional duty and a religious obligation. Citing Jinnah’s historic August 11, 1947 address, he described it as an ideological assurance of a secure future for minorities. He also paid tribute to minority community members who sacrificed their lives for the country’s defense, vowing to promote progress and unity without discrimination.

President Asif Ali Zardari said National Minorities Day serves as a reminder of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s vision and the constitutional guarantee of equal rights for all citizens, regardless of religion, caste, or ethnicity. He noted that since the day was officially declared in 2009, Pakistan has taken steps for the welfare and empowerment of minorities, and pledged continued efforts to promote interfaith harmony.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said Pakistan was built on the golden Islamic principles of justice, equality, and tolerance, which will always remain its foundation. He stressed that ensuring the safety of minorities, protecting their places of worship, and enabling their full participation in national life are priorities for the state.

Senate Chairman Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani praised minorities for their important role in Pakistan’s development and stability. He said their contributions in various fields remain valuable and assured that the upper house will continue working to protect their rights.

Pakistan Peoples Party Vice President Senator Sherry Rehman said the protection of minority rights is a shared responsibility of both the state and its citizens. She recalled that the observance of National Minorities Day was introduced by President Zardari in 2009, underscoring the party’s commitment to this cause.
