Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Proposes Judicial Reforms with New Supreme Court Bench Structure
The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) has prepared a 23-point plan for judicial reforms, recommending the formation of a specialized Supreme Court bench instead of the earlier suggested Judicial Commission, according to insider sources.
These sources reveal that the draft suggests creating a bench comprising the Chief Justice and five senior Supreme Court justices to handle petitions, moving away from the idea of a Judicial Commission. The JUI-F intends to soon present this draft amendment to the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
Key points of the proposal include preserving the current powers of the Supreme Court and High Courts, keeping the retirement age for judges at 65, and maintaining the status of Articles 8 and 199 of the Constitution without any alterations. Notably, no changes have been suggested to Article 63A.
The JUI-F also calls for the reinstatement of the judicial appointment process as established in the 18th Amendment and emphasizes the importance of considering the Council of Islamic Ideology’s recommendations in future legislation.
