Pakistan Launches Massive Anti-Polio Drive Targeting 9.5 Million Children

Islamabad: Pakistan has launched an extensive anti-polio campaign spanning 49 districts, aiming to vaccinate over 9.5 million children under five years old. This initiative responds to a recent surge in polio cases, particularly in Balochistan province.

The campaign focuses on districts with persistent poliovirus transmission, including 16 in Balochistan, 11 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 16 in Sindh, and 6 in Punjab. In Islamabad, specific Union Councils will undergo a door-to-door vaccination effort to ensure comprehensive coverage.

While the exact duration of the campaign wasn’t specified in the release, such initiatives typically span several days, with teams revisiting areas to reach every child. The National Command and Operation Center (NCOC) underscores the critical need to target areas with ongoing virus circulation.

Karachi Launches Special Polio Drive Following Reported Cases in Keamari

KARACHI: In response to reported polio cases in Keamari, a special polio eradication campaign has been launched by the Health Department of Sindh.

Starting today, the campaign aims to administer polio drops to children up to 5 years old across Keamari district until July 13. This initiative targets all children, including those with zero doses of polio vaccine.

Recently, a three-year-old girl from Keamari was diagnosed with poliovirus, prompting urgent measures to prevent further outbreaks. This effort extends to safeguarding children in high-risk environments across 15 districts in Sindh, including Hyderabad, Sukkur, Jamshoro, Jacobabad, Badin, Qamber, Mirpur Khas, and Shikarpur.

According to the Emergency Operations Center Sindh, two polio cases have been reported this year, one from Shikarpur and another from Karachi’s Keamari district. The confirmed cases underline ongoing challenges in polio eradication efforts despite ongoing vaccination drives.

This campaign underscores the commitment to protect children against poliovirus, ensuring comprehensive vaccination coverage in vulnerable communities.

This initiative aims to bolster public health resilience against polio, emphasizing proactive measures to curb its spread.
