14-Year-Old Georgia Student Kills 4 and Injures 9 in School Shooting

Victims Include Two Students and Two Teachers

Georgia-A 14-year-old student at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, opened fire on Wednesday, killing two classmates and two teachers while injuring nine others. This tragic event marks the first mass shooting at a U.S. school this academic year.

The suspect, identified as Colt Gray, was known to law enforcement from a previous investigation into online threats about a school shooting. He was apprehended shortly after the incident and is expected to be charged and tried as an adult, according to Chris Hosey, director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Sheriff Jud Smith reported that Gray, armed with a semiautomatic rifle, was quickly subdued by school deputies and surrendered without resistance. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, though investigators believe he acted alone.

The victims have been named as 14-year-old students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, and teachers Richard Aspinwall, 39, and Christina Irimie, 53. The nine individuals hospitalized are expected to recover.

The FBI revealed that they had previously investigated online threats linked to Gray last year, though no arrest was made at that time. Local schools were advised to monitor the situation, but no immediate action was taken due to insufficient evidence.

The shooting has reignited the national debate on gun control and prompted widespread grief. In Winder, a community vigil was held to honor the victims and provide support to those affected.

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have called for stronger gun safety measures, while former President Donald Trump expressed condolences to the victims’ families. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp emphasized the need for an investigation and mourning rather than political debate at this time.

This incident is noted as the first planned school attack of the fall season, according to David Riedman, who tracks school shootings. The U.S. has experienced numerous school shootings over the past two decades, intensifying the debate over gun laws and the Second Amendment.
