Angola Illegal Gold Mining Deaths: 28 Miners Killed in Collapse

Angola Illegal Gold Mining Deaths Rise as Bengo Province Mine Disaster Claims 28 Lives

Congo – (Web Desk) – At least 28 miners lost their lives in Angola illegal gold mining deaths after a small artisanal gold mine suddenly collapsed in Bengo province, located northeast of the capital Luanda, early Saturday morning.

The victims were young men aged between 18 and 45 years. Shockingly, 13 of them belonged to the same family, making this tragedy even more heartbreaking for one community.

A local police official confirmed the death toll on national broadcaster TPA, saying the miners were extracting gold when the mine walls gave way without warning. Rescue teams have been working to recover any remaining bodies from the site.

Angola sits on enormous mineral wealth. Its gold and diamond deposits attract thousands of workers every year, including many from neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo, who risk their lives in unregulated and unsupported mining conditions.

Officials in Bengo province estimate that around 7,000 illegal miners are currently working in gold extraction across the region. These operations run without proper safety equipment, structural support, or government oversight, making deadly accidents almost inevitable.

Authorities are urging people to avoid illegal mining sites while investigations into the collapse continue.
