PTA Urges Fast VPN Policy Due to Network Issues

According to sources within the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), the increase in unregistered VPN usage is affecting network performance. The PTA has urged the Ministry of Information Technology to expedite the approval of a long-awaited VPN policy.

The PTA has called on the IT Ministry to swiftly finalize and implement a comprehensive VPN policy. The authority has stressed that the goal of regulating VPNs is not to ban their use but to ensure that they are registered and comply with national regulations.

While VPNs are not prohibited, there is a pressing need to regulate and register them to curb the rise of illegal and unregistered use among telecom users in Pakistan. Millions of freelancers and IT companies in the country rely on VPNs for their operations, making VPN registration essential for maintaining the efficiency and security of Pakistan’s digital infrastructure.

PTA sources have clarified that VPN registration will not negatively impact users. The primary aim is to safeguard personal data and ensure secure VPN usage. Although the PTA had previously formulated a VPN policy to address these issues, it has been awaiting approval from the IT Ministry.

As internet services face slowdowns and unregistered VPN usage increases, the PTA is intensifying its push for the policy’s enactment. “Approval of the VPN policy is crucial and needs to happen soon to protect the interests of all stakeholders,” said a PTA source. The authority assured users that registered VPNs would not be affected by network firewalls and that their personal data would remain secure.

The PTA remains dedicated to safeguarding Pakistan’s internet infrastructure against the negative impacts of illegal VPN use while ensuring user privacy and security. The final decision on the VPN policy now depends on the IT Ministry, whose prompt approval is highly anticipated by industry stakeholders.
