Zardari Shehbaz Stress Truth and Responsibility On Press Freedom Day

ISLAMABAD: (Web Desk) – On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, Shehbaz Sharif and Asif Ali Zardari emphasized the importance of responsible journalism and the need to counter misinformation. Both leaders urged media professionals to avoid spreading unverified reports and propaganda, highlighting that accurate information plays a crucial role in maintaining peace and stability.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif noted that in today’s fast-paced digital environment, responsible journalism is just as important as diplomacy in promoting harmony. He praised Pakistan’s media for presenting the country’s stance with clarity and unity during challenging times, while also keeping the public informed and addressing misinformation. He added that digital platforms have become powerful tools in shaping public opinion, but the rise of fake news and coordinated disinformation campaigns poses a serious threat to national cohesion.

He called on journalists to uphold the highest standards of verification, honesty, and professionalism, stressing that competition in modern media should never come at the expense of truth. The government, he said, remains committed to safeguarding press freedom and creating an enabling environment for journalists.

Meanwhile, President Asif Ali Zardari highlighted that disinformation is increasingly undermining democratic dialogue worldwide. He stressed that peace cannot exist without truth and that journalism plays a vital role in ensuring accountability and transparency. Referring to Article 19 of the Constitution of Pakistan, he reaffirmed the country’s commitment to protecting freedom of expression.

The president also raised concerns about the misuse of social media and ongoing misinformation campaigns targeting Pakistan. He paid tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty and called for a safer working environment for media professionals. Both leaders concluded by urging the public to reject false narratives and support credible, fact-based reporting for the sake of national stability.
