WhatsApp hacking cases surge across Pakistan, experts warn

Pakistani users targeted in rising WhatsApp scams and blackmail schemes

KARACHI: (Web Desk) – Reports of WhatsApp account hacks and related fraud are rising in Pakistan, with victims facing financial loss and blackmail, according to a private TV report.

Cybersecurity experts have warned users to exercise extreme caution when sharing verification codes (OTPs). Hackers are reportedly targeting citizens through phone calls from unknown numbers, often posing as representatives of courier companies. They trick victims by claiming that a parcel has arrived and require the OTP for delivery.

Once the victim shares the one-time password, the hacker gains control of their WhatsApp account. The compromised accounts are then used to send urgent-sounding messages to the victim’s contacts, demanding money and causing significant financial losses.

Experts noted that elderly people and housewives are particularly vulnerable, being less familiar with digital security protocols. One victim shared that messages were sent to thousands of contacts, resulting in dozens of people transferring money under false pretenses.

Cybersecurity officials emphasized that citizens should never share OTPs or personal information with unknown callers. They stressed that public awareness campaigns are critical to prevent these crimes and safeguard users from social media fraud.
