Wellington Sewage Flood Island Bay After Heavy Storm

Wellington Sewage Flood Leaves Island Bay Homes in Crisis

New Zealand – (Web Desk) – A powerful overnight storm triggered a serious Wellington sewage flood in Island Bay, leaving several homes covered in wastewater, human waste, and sanitary items. Wellington Water confirmed that intense rainfall blocked a key wastewater main, causing overflow into at least five residential properties in the scenic suburb.

Wellington Water crews arrived on-site with a suction truck to begin cleaning and disinfecting the affected homes. The utility company said it was working closely with property owners to manage the situation as quickly as possible.

Local resident Richard Peters described the scene as deeply unpleasant, saying brown water mixed with waste and sanitary products had spread across the ground near his home. He called the situation foul and unlike anything he had seen before.

According to national weather service Metservice, Wellington recorded over 5,000 lightning strikes during the night as a thunderstorm dumped around 25.7 millimetres of rain on the city in just two hours.

The storm also worsened conditions at the already struggling Moa Point wastewater treatment plant, which has not worked properly since a storm in February. Since that breakdown, millions of litres of untreated sewage have been flowing into the ocean near Wellington’s south coast beaches.

Temporary repairs have kept things partially running, but the plant is not expected to be fully restored until November. The latest storm pushed even more raw wastewater into the sea overnight.

Wellington Water urged all residents to stay away from Tarakena Bay and avoid swimming, surfing, or kayaking along Wellington’s south coast until the situation improves.
