USA Reach World Cup Knockouts, Brazil Advance
United States Qualify Early After Comfortable Victory
Playing in Seattle, the Americans delivered another confident performance to secure qualification with a match to spare. An own goal from Cameron Burgess in the 11th minute gave the hosts an early advantage before Alex Freeman doubled the lead with a well-taken header shortly before halftime.
The victory followed the USA’s impressive 4-1 triumph over Paraguay in their opening fixture, marking a dream start to the tournament under head coach Mauricio Pochettino.
“It was a fantastic game again, especially in the first half,” Pochettino said after the match. “We dominated against a very tough opponent and showed great character throughout.”

The result leaves the United States in a strong position to finish top of Group D, depending on the outcome of the later match between Turkey and Paraguay.
Australia, meanwhile, struggled to find rhythm throughout the contest. Head coach Tony Popovic admitted his side looked sluggish and failed to compete effectively in the opening period.
“We were slow to every ball and couldn’t regain momentum,” Popovic said. “We conceded soft goals and looked flat in the first half.”
Elsewhere, Morocco secured their first victory of the tournament with a narrow 1-0 win over Scotland in Foxborough, Massachusetts. Ismael Saibari scored the decisive goal just two minutes into the match with a powerful strike that proved enough to earn all three points.
Morocco remain in contention for a place in the knockout rounds and will face Haiti in their final Group C fixture, while Scotland must now prepare for a difficult encounter against Brazil.
Off the field, Iran’s football federation voiced concerns over what it described as unfair treatment during the tournament. Secretary General Hedayat Mombeyni criticized travel restrictions imposed on the team after a request to fly from their training base in Mexico to Los Angeles ahead of their match against Belgium was reportedly denied.
The federation has indicated it will submit a formal complaint to FIFA regarding the matter, while US authorities have defended their position.
As the group stage progresses, several teams are already beginning to secure their places in the knockout rounds, with the United States emerging as one of the tournament’s early standout performers.
