US House Votes to Approve Ukraine Aid Despite Republican Leadership Opposition
Republicans Unite With Democrats to Approve Ukraine Aid in Historic House Vote
Republicans & Ukraine – (Web Desk) – The US House of Representatives voted to approve Ukraine aid on Thursday, passing the Ukraine Support Act in a 226 to 195 vote. More than a dozen Republicans broke away from their party leadership and joined Democrats to back the bill, marking a rare moment of bipartisan action on foreign policy.
The bill provides over $1 billion in security and reconstruction funding for Ukraine. It also authorizes $8 billion in financing loans to support Ukraine’s defense operations against Russia.
Republican supporters of the bill used a discharge petition to force the vote. This process allows a majority in the House to bypass leadership and bring a bill directly to the floor.
This vote is the latest sign of growing tension between some Republicans and President Donald Trump. Earlier in the week, four Republicans also joined Democrats to pass a resolution aimed at limiting further US military action in Iran.
The White House pushed back on that resolution, calling it an unconstitutional move to restrict presidential power.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also made headlines Thursday by writing an open letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin. He called for a face-to-face meeting and a full ceasefire during any peace negotiations.
Putin rejected the ceasefire idea the same day. Previous peace talks in Geneva, Abu Dhabi, and Istanbul have all ended without results.
Trump said he thought it would be “great” if the two leaders met directly.
The Ukraine Support Act still has a long road ahead. It must pass the Senate and receive Trump’s signature before becoming law. Analysts say both steps remain unlikely in the current political climate.
