US and 30 Nations Urge Immediate Action to Prevent Famine in Sudan

International Coalition Calls for Unhindered Aid Access Across War-Torn Sudan

WASHINGTON: (News Desk) – The United States and 30 other countries have called for urgent international action to address the worsening food security crisis in Sudan, warning that millions of people face hunger and the risk of famine as fighting continues.

In a joint statement issued by the US State Department on Monday, the 31 countries described the deterioration in Sudan’s food security as alarming and urged immediate measures to prevent further loss of life.

The war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces erupted in April 2023 and has triggered a massive humanitarian emergency. Aid workers estimate that more than 200,000 people have been killed and over 13 million displaced, making Sudan the scene of the world’s largest hunger and displacement crises.

“The risk of famine in the coming months, as warned by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, needs urgent action,” the statement said. “There is no time to lose to save lives and prevent famine.”

According to the statement, an estimated 19.5 million people—more than 40 per cent of Sudan’s population—are experiencing acute food insecurity, including around five million facing emergency levels of hunger.

The countries also warned that the number of children suffering from severe acute malnutrition could exceed the projected 825,000 without immediate intervention. The number of areas affected by food insecurity is also expected to double if the situation continues to deteriorate.

The signatories called on both sides of the conflict to remove obstacles to humanitarian assistance and ensure aid workers can reach people in need safely and without delay.

They also urged the warring parties to protect humanitarian personnel and allow the full, safe, rapid and unhindered delivery of assistance across the country.

The statement was endorsed by Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Hungary, Latvia, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, alongside the United States.
