UNFPA Backs Gilgit-Baltistan Health Population Initiatives
UNFPA Pledges Continued Support for GB Population Health Efforts
Gilgit: (News Desk) – Significant progress has been reported in population management and reproductive health services in Gilgit-Baltistan, with the United Nations Population Fund pledging continued support for ongoing initiatives in the region.
A high-level UNFPA delegation, led by Deputy Country Representative Dr. Gulnara, met with senior officials of the Social Welfare, Population Welfare and Women Development Department to review population strategies, reproductive health services, and future policy directions.
Officials highlighted that with support from development partners, the region has made notable improvements in family planning and maternal healthcare. Key programmes such as “Sehatmand Khandan” and “Sehat Ka Safar” have expanded access to healthcare services, particularly in remote and underserved areas.
Development partners, including the Aga Khan Foundation, Aga Khan Health Services, and the Family Planning Association, were acknowledged for their contributions to improving healthcare delivery. Authorities also noted that women’s economic empowerment is being strengthened through training and market access initiatives, while youth resource centres have been established in Diamer and Hunza.
The introduction of modern systems such as the Electronic Client Record (ECR) has further improved healthcare data management and service delivery efficiency.

Officials informed the delegation that work is underway on the Youth Policy 2024 and Population Policy 2026–2035, alongside proposed legislation aimed at reducing child marriages and improving maternal health outcomes. However, challenges such as malnutrition and high maternal and child mortality rates persist in several districts including Diamer, Kharmang, Astore, Shigar, and Nagar.
Representing UNFPA, Dr. Gulnara praised the regional government’s efforts and reaffirmed full organizational support. She emphasized the need to strengthen data systems, ensure consistent availability of medicines, and expand youth-focused programmes to enhance long-term impact.
The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment from the Gilgit-Baltistan government to pursue sustainable population goals through evidence-based planning and continued collaboration with international partners.
