WASHINGTON: (News Desk) – US President Donald Trump has said the situation surrounding a possible conflict with Iran has reached a critical stage, warning that major developments could soon take place in the region.

Speaking to a US television network, Trump said the time had come for a major decision on Iran. He also issued a warning of severe consequences if Tehran failed to change its course, while leaving open the possibility of holding talks with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

Trump outlined what he described as three possible outcomes for Iran: destruction, severe damage to its economy, or reaching an agreement with the United States.

He warned that Iran would have to alter its behaviour to avoid what he described as the possibility of destruction or economic collapse.

The US president also suggested that he could meet Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session in New York.

His comments come amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran and renewed diplomatic speculation over possible US-Iran engagement.

A few days earlier, the United States issued visas to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, allowing them to travel to New York to attend the UN General Assembly session.

FM Araghchi says UN credibility eroded over failure to uphold world peace

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said trust in the United Nations has been lost, criticising its failure to uphold world peace and security, Al Jazeera reported on Tuesday.

The top diplomat made the remarks upon his arrival in New York before the UN General Assembly (UNGA) meeting.

“This visit takes place following the cowardly war waged against us by the US and the Zionist regime, the subsequent developments, and in reality, amidst a situation that effectively remains a state of war,” he said.

“Naturally, our primary objective is to utilise a major international platform to defend the legitimacy, rights, and interests of the Iranian people,” the minister added.

Araghchi stated that the UN had lost credibility and trust due to its failure to uphold world peace and security. He pointed out that the UNGA is set to open on Tuesday under the theme “restoring trust”.

“This reflects a universal acknowledgement that trust in the organisation has eroded, or vanished entirely, due to its failure to effectively maintain international peace and security,” Araghchi said.

“Certain nations arrogate to themselves the right to act with impunity, disregarding international institutions, international law, and even the collective conscience of humanity; they claim immunity for themselves and their allies.”
