Trump Plans Mass Deportations and Executive Action on Immigration

WASHINGTON: President-elect Donald Trump has announced plans to deport all immigrants living in the U.S. illegally during his four-year term, while seeking a deal to protect “Dreamer” immigrants—those brought to the U.S. as children. In an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Trump emphasized the need for mass deportations, stating, “I think you have to do it,” referring to enforcing immigration laws.

Trump also revealed plans to take executive action on his first day in office to end birthright citizenship, which grants U.S. citizenship to anyone born on American soil, regardless of their parents’ immigration status. This move is likely to face legal challenges, as birthright citizenship is supported by the 14th Amendment and Supreme Court precedent.

Trump aims to declare illegal immigration a national emergency and apply federal resources to a broad crackdown. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security estimated that around 11 million immigrants are in the U.S. illegally as of 2022.

His incoming team, including Tom Homan and Stephen Miller, has called for increased funding for immigration enforcement, with estimates suggesting that deporting all illegal immigrants could cost $88 billion annually.
