WASHINGTON: (News Desk) – US President Donald Trump has announced a phased tariff plan on imported generic medicines, saying the measure is intended to encourage pharmaceutical companies to shift manufacturing operations to the United States.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said imported generic drugs will continue to face a zero percent tariff from August 1, 2026, for a two-year transition period.
Under the proposed policy, tariffs on imported generic medicines will increase to 100% beginning in August 2028 and remain at that level for one year. Afterward, the tariff rate will double to 200%, significantly increasing the cost of imported generic pharmaceuticals.
Trump said the initiative is designed to boost domestic drug manufacturing, reduce reliance on overseas production and strengthen the US pharmaceutical supply chain.
The announcement is expected to have significant implications for global generic drug exporters, particularly countries that supply large volumes of affordable medicines to the US market.
