Sindh Open Golf Championship: Omar Khalid Makes History as First Amateur Champion

Omar Khalid Wins Sindh Open Golf Championship

KARACHI – (Staff Reporter/Web Desk) – Omar Khalid has written a new chapter in Pakistan golf history by becoming the first amateur to win the Sindh Open Golf Championship overall title. He beat several professional players to reach the top of the leaderboard, a feat no amateur golfer had managed before him in this event.

The young golfer showed incredible skill across the 54-hole tournament. He finished with a score of seven-under par, which was enough to win both the overall crown and the amateur category. His final round left him two shots clear of the best professional in the field, Minhaj Maqsood.

Maqsood did not walk away empty handed. He won the professional section of the tournament with a score of five-under par. Matloob Ahmed followed close behind in second place among the professionals, ending his campaign at four-under par.

The amateur category also produced strong performances. Sharan Ali Khan claimed second place, while Syed Rayan Ahmed rounded out the top three finishers.

This win is just the latest in a long line of achievements for Omar. He first grabbed attention at age sixteen when he became the youngest golfer ever to win the Pakistan National Amateur Golf Championship. Not long after, he climbed to become the country’s youngest golfer to reach the number one amateur ranking.

Omar’s talent has taken him well beyond Pakistan’s borders too. He remains the only Pakistani golfer to ever win a professional event in the United States. That victory came at the Fendrich Open in Evansville, Indiana, where he posted a stunning 14-under-par total over two rounds, shooting 61 and 65.

Right now, Omar plays college golf in the United States as part of NCAA Division I. He recently made history again by becoming the first Pakistani golfer to earn NCAA All-Conference honours, thanks to a podium finish at the Missouri Valley Conference Championship in Illinois.

After two seasons at the University of Evansville, Omar is preparing for a fresh start. He will join Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee this August following his transfer.

His resume is filled with firsts. Omar is the only Pakistani golfer to ever make the cut at a USGA event, a milestone he reached at the US Junior Amateur Championship held at Bandon Dunes in Oregon. He also holds the record for the biggest winning margin in the Faldo Series Pakistan, winning one title by a remarkable 40 strokes.

On the international stage, Omar finished fourth at the Qatar Open Golf Championship in Doha. He has also proudly represented Pakistan at the Asian Games, the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship, and the World Amateur Team Championship for the Eisenhower Trophy.

With each new tournament, Omar Khalid continues to prove that Pakistani golf has a bright future on the world stage.
