Sheikh Hasina’s Son Refutes Claims of US Allegations
A day after reports surfaced that former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had accused the United States of being behind the crisis leading to her government’s downfall, her son, Sajeeb Wazed, clarified that no such statement was made by his mother.
Bngladesh(Staff Reporter): On X, Wazed stated, “The recent resignation statement attributed to my mother and published in the newspaper is entirely false and fabricated. I have confirmed with her that she has not made any such statement, neither before nor after leaving Dhaka.
Media reports had suggested that Sheikh Hasina’s purported resignation letter claimed she could have preserved her government had she consented to cede St Martin Island—a strategically important area 9 km south of Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf peninsula—to the United States.
Amidst this turmoil, violence persists in Bangladesh as unrest intensifies, despite Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus being appointed to head the interim government. Yunus now faces the formidable task of restoring stability amid ongoing violence and widespread disorder.
The situation has deteriorated as the police force, following brutal attacks even during attempts to surrender, has ceased active duty. Officers, fearing further violence, are adopting a cautious stance, which is worsening the chaos.
PM Hasina Steps Down, Bangladesh Army Chief Confirms Interim Government
Professor Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah, a prominent political commentator in Dhaka, informed TNIE, “The police are present at their stations in plain clothes but are remaining passive. They have outlined several demands, including the establishment of a separate ministry for their needs, and until these demands are met, they will continue their slow approach.”
Meanwhile, the Border Security Force (BSF) reported arresting 11 Bangladeshi nationals who were trying to cross into India illegally.
