Pakistan – (Special Correspondent/Web Desk) – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s UN General Assembly address will put a strong focus on Kashmir and Palestine, Pakistan’s top envoy to the UN has confirmed.
Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad shared the update during a media talk in New York on Sunday. He said the premier’s speech will also touch on global cooperation, climate change, and the wider world situation.
Shehbaz is set to take the stage at the 81st session of the UN General Assembly on September 25. It will be one of the most closely watched moments of his New York trip.
Alongside his UN address, the prime minister is expected to hold several meetings with world leaders during his stay. Officials say talks are underway to also arrange a sit-down with Apple’s top boss, Tim Cook.
This visit lands at a busy time. The UNGA’s high-level week is already in full swing, and tensions in the Middle East are shaping much of the conversation among global leaders.
According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office, Shehbaz’s speech will go beyond Kashmir and Gaza. He is also likely to speak on sustainable development, counterterrorism, Islamophobia, economic pressures, and reforms within the UN system.
The Foreign Office added that issues facing the Global South will also find space in his remarks. Pakistan, officials say, will keep pushing for dialogue and diplomacy as the way forward for unresolved conflicts.
Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar has already reached New York ahead of Shehbaz. He has been busy meeting foreign ministers and senior officials in the lead-up to the premier’s arrival.
Dar is also set to join separate meetings focused on Kashmir and Palestine, held on the sidelines of the ongoing UNGA session.
Pakistan has repeatedly called for an end to the violence in Gaza. It continues to back the idea of an independent Palestinian state, based on existing UN resolutions.
On the Kashmir front, Islamabad has kept raising the dispute at UN forums. It continues to press for the right of Kashmiri people to decide their own future.
Earlier this month, Ambassador Ahmad spoke to Geo News about Pakistan’s approach. He said the country is working toward a peaceful path through dialogue and support from international and UN-backed channels.
He explained that Pakistan’s efforts are aimed at securing a ceasefire, easing tensions, and bringing both sides back to the table as the regional picture keeps worsening.
The envoy said Pakistan wants a solution rooted in international law rather than continued conflict. He pointed to the UN Security Council’s own charter, which favors negotiation over war.
Ahmad also admitted that things are currently heading in a difficult direction. Still, he said Pakistan understands it has a part to play in stopping matters from getting worse.
With Shehbaz’s UN General Assembly address just days away, attention will now shift to how strongly he addresses these long-standing disputes on the global stage. His remarks are expected to reflect Pakistan’s continued push for a fair and peaceful resolution to both the Kashmir and Palestine issues.
