RIYADH: (News Desk) – Schools across Riyadh have shifted to remote learning for a week after parents were informed of a last-minute decision to keep schools closed, according to messages seen by AFP.
Parents received emails from schools on Sunday informing them that in-person classes would be suspended throughout the week. Two separate messages seen by AFP said schools had been instructed by Saudi authorities to remain closed.
No official explanation was provided for the decision. The announcement comes amid heightened tensions in the Gulf and a series of near-daily attacks on Saudi Arabia by Iran-backed Houthi fighters based in Yemen.
One Riyadh-based parent, who spoke to AFP on condition of anonymity, questioned the lack of information, saying families deserved greater clarity when a decision affected an entire school community for a full week.
Another Lebanese expatriate living in Riyadh described the move as a last-minute decision and said families had little information about what was happening.
The announcement came a day after the Saudi-led coalition fighting Yemen’s Houthis said it had intercepted drones and ballistic missiles launched toward the kingdom.
The latest strikes are part of an escalation in Houthi attacks that began in July, when renewed hostilities ended a years-long truce and drew Yemen further into the broader Middle East conflict.
Earlier, the United Nations Security Council condemned the escalating Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, noting that the strikes had injured civilians, including women and children.
