Punjab Introduces Digital Fare System for Metro and Orange Line Services
The new payment system will be implemented across metro bus services in Lahore, Multan, Rawalpindi, and Islamabad.
Lahore: (Asif Iqbal)- The Punjab government has approved a major overhaul of its public transport fare collection system, introducing a digital payment framework across metro bus services and the Orange Line Train. The move aims to modernize the province’s mass transit systems and improve commuter convenience.
According to the decision made in a high-level meeting chaired by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the traditional token-based fare system will soon be phased out and replaced by a unified, card-based payment system. Commuters will now be able to pay fares via credit and debit cards, ATM cards, mobile wallet apps, and NFC-enabled devices.
The new payment system will be implemented across metro bus services in Lahore, Multan, Rawalpindi, and Islamabad. The Orange Line Train in Lahore will also adopt this digital payment solution, allowing passengers to tap-and-go using their cards or smartphones.
A single, province-wide fare card the T-Cash Card will be introduced, enabling seamless travel on any metro or Orange Line route in Punjab. A separate, discounted card will also be launched for students.
During the meeting, the Chief Minister gave in-principle approval for hiring on technical posts ranging from Grade 5 to 18 in the Transport Department. Furthermore, Punjab is set to host its first International Transport Expo, marking a significant milestone for the sector.
Another major initiative announced was the introduction of a unified RFID sticker for all vehicle-related operations across Punjab, streamlining data and administrative processes.
The government also approved the rollout of electric rickshaws as a sustainable alternative to traditional motorbike rickshaws. CM Maryam Nawaz directed the Transport Department to submit detailed proposals for the project.

Designs and color schemes for 50 prefabricated bus shelters in Lahore were also reviewed, with installation already underway.
This transformation marks a significant step towards modernizing Punjab’s public transport infrastructure, improving accessibility, sustainability, and passenger experience.
