Maryam Nawaz Pledges to Remove Barriers for Students' Success, Urges Contribution to Nation’s Future
Lahore – Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has launched a comprehensive initiative aimed at empowering the youth through education, entrepreneurship, and technology. The package includes 50,000 scholarships, 100,000 free electric bikes, and interest-free loans to foster innovation and business growth among students.
Addressing a scholarship distribution ceremony at Bahauddin Zakaria University, the Chief Minister emphasized the provincial government’s commitment to merit-based educational opportunities. “All scholarships will be awarded purely on merit, without any political distinctions,” she affirmed, highlighting the importance of education as the foundation for progress.
In a heartfelt speech, Maryam Nawaz congratulated the scholarship recipients, their parents, and teachers, acknowledging the sacrifices families make to ensure their children’s education. “I am here not only as a Chief Minister but also as a mother to all of you,” she said, expressing deep empathy for the students’ journey.
Scholarships and Interest-Free Loans
Maryam Nawaz announced plans to expand the scholarship program next year, with 50,000 students expected to benefit. Additionally, full tuition fees will be covered for students enrolled in both public and private institutions. The Chief Minister also revealed the introduction of an interest-free loan scheme, offering up to Rs 30 million to students who wish to launch startups or businesses. “This initiative aims to encourage entrepreneurship and secure a brighter future for our youth,” she stated.
Electric Bikes Initiative
Addressing environmental concerns, Maryam Nawaz highlighted the government’s efforts to combat air pollution by providing electric bikes to students. She announced that 30,000 e-bikes had already been distributed, with a target of 100,000 bikes to be provided next year. She also shared that discussions were underway with a Chinese company to establish an e-bike manufacturing unit in Punjab.
Focus on Education in Technology
The Chief Minister stressed the need for greater emphasis on education in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and science and technology. “We aim to equip students with the skills needed for a secure future in a rapidly changing world,” she said.
Maryam Nawaz also praised the Higher Education Commission and Punjab’s Education Minister Rana Sikandar for their ongoing efforts to advance educational reforms.
A Call for Civic Responsibility
In a veiled critique of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, Maryam Nawaz warned students against being misled by calls for unrest. “Do not become anyone’s fuel or fall for those who advocate chaos,” she cautioned, urging the youth to engage in peaceful, democratic actions aimed at the country’s betterment.
