LAHORE: (Staff Reporter) – Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has expressed serious concern over the poor Class 9 examination results and ordered action against teachers linked to weak academic performance, with the provincial government also deciding to introduce a new ordinance to hold teachers accountable.
The decisions were taken during a video-link meeting chaired by Maryam Nawaz in Lahore on Thursday to review the performance of the school education sector.
The meeting agreed in principle to link students’ examination results with teachers’ performance. The chief minister directed immediate action in schools where the Class 9 pass rate is below 20 per cent.
Maryam Nawaz also approved, in principle, the introduction of monthly and annual examinations for every class. Officials were directed to prepare a detailed timeline and education reforms plan and present it at the next meeting.
At the same time, the chief minister ordered incentives for schools achieving outstanding results. Top-performing schools in every district will be recognised and awarded.
The meeting also approved evening coaching classes for academically weak students in government schools. Authorities were directed to discourage the practice of removing weaker students from schools because of poor academic performance.
Maryam Nawaz ordered that all vacant headteacher posts be filled within 45 days and directed the appointment of subject specialists in government schools. She also instructed the education minister to strengthen checking and monitoring mechanisms at every level.
The chief minister expressed satisfaction over the strong performance of Government Girls High School Bhoun in Jhang and sought monthly, district-wise performance ratings of schools.
The meeting further decided to introduce a Unified Monitoring App to improve school oversight and monitoring.
A pilot project titled “Library on Wheels” will also be launched in Lahore. The three-wheeler mobile library will provide access to more than 20,000 digital books as well as video-learning lectures.
Maryam Nawaz also sought a performance report on outsourced schools.
The chief minister said that mere point-scoring in government schools would not resolve the education system’s problems and stressed the need for tangible improvement. She added that teachers’ efforts should ultimately be reflected in students’ academic results.
