Policeman and 2 man martyred, 10 people injured in suicide blast at I-10 Islamabad today

Islamabad: (Staff Reporter) Two people including a policeman were martyred and 10 others injured when a suicide blast rocked the Islamabad’s I-10 Sector on Friday, the first such attack in the federal capital for years. A spokesman of Islamabad police confirmed that it was a suicide blast, saying there was a high alert in the federal capital, and patrolling and strict checking of vehicles was underway.

According to the source, when a suspicious taxi was signaled to stop at a police post, the bomber riding in the vehicle exploded his suicide vest martyring two people and injuring 10 others including four cops. Tehreek–e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has claimed responsibility of the suicide blast. The intelligence agencies, rescue and police teams have rushed to the blast site and cordoned off the area.

As per details, the blast took place inside the taxi and it was so intense that the vehicle was completely destroyed by it. The martyred cop was identified as Head Constable Adeel Hussain. The police also found the mobile phone of the dead bomber. The registration number of the taxi in which the suicide blast occurred was LEI-1793 and it belonged to Sajjad Haider Shah, resident of Chakwal.

Furthermore senior police official Sohail Zafar Chattha said officers had been following a suspicious taxi occupied by a male driver and a woman passenger. “They were stopped and the long-haired man was asked to come out,” Chattha told reporters at the blast scene. “He came out, but quickly went back inside and pressed a button that blew up the car.”

Moreover he said the fate of the passenger was not certain, but a policeman was confirmed dead and 10 people were wounded including four officers. Islamabad has largely been spared the low-level attacks carried out in the country’s megacities of Lahore and Karachi, and also along the border areas near Afghanistan. Tehreek–e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) called off a stop-start ceasefire with the government in November.

Meanwhile a crowd that gathered after Friday’s Islamabad blast was quick to blame the group. “TTP is doing all this, how can they claim that they are Muslims?” said Qasda, who only gave her first name.

Haji Mohammad Saeed, 60, a retired government official, said authorities should end all negotiations with the group: “They are taking advantage of this dialogue and causing violence.” Following the suicide blast, high alert has been sounded in the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Entry of irrelevant vehicles in the federal capital has been banned.
