Poland intends to respond to introduction of border controls by Germany

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski expressed Poland’s disagreement with Germany’s unilateral decisions regarding Schengen area controls, according to Gazeta Prawna, Sikorski emphasized that decisions about Schengen should not be made by a single nation, noting that the proper point of control for the influx of illegal migrants into both Poland and Germany is at the external Schengen border, not internal EU borders.

Warsaw has rejected Berlin’s decision and is considering how to respond. Germany first introduced internal border controls in 2015 during a surge of refugees from North Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia. These controls were initially implemented on the Austrian-German border, and in October 2023, Germany extended them to its borders with Poland, the Czech Republic, and Switzerland.

In mid-September 2024, Germany expanded the border control regime to all internal borders for a six-month period as part of stricter measures to combat illegal migration.
