PM Shehbaz Warns Power Firms: Overbilling Will Not Be Tolerated Under Any Circumstances
PM called for a transparent and merit-based recruitment process for all such positions.
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday condemned the overbilling practices by power distribution companies (Discos) and assured that strict action would be taken against any officers involved in such activities. Chairing a review meeting on the performance of electricity distribution companies, the PM emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in the billing system.
The Prime Minister directed that the installation of smart meters be expedited to enhance billing transparency and prevent electricity theft. He also expressed concern over the delayed appointments of chief executive officers (CEOs) at key distribution companies, including Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lesco), Peshawar Electric Supply Company (Pesco), and Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (Fesco). He called for a transparent and merit-based recruitment process for all such positions.
PM Shehbaz stressed that all available resources should be used to meet the targets set by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) and urged the power sector to achieve improved recovery rates.
The meeting reviewed progress on targets for the 2024-25 fiscal year, with recovery rates at 96.82% for Lesco, 87.98% for Pesco, and 97.57% for Fesco. The Prime Minister’s concerns align with recent actions taken by Nepra, which initiated legal proceedings against K-Electric and other power companies for excessive charges, following consumer complaints of inflated bills in July and August.
