Wellness Influencers Drive Peptide Use Despite Limited Scientific Evidence

ISLAMABAD: (News Desk) – A growing number of fitness enthusiasts and wellness followers are turning to synthetic peptides in an effort to improve their appearance, performance, sleep and overall wellbeing, despite mounting warnings from medical experts.

Thomas, a French aspiring bodybuilder whose name has been changed, told media that he uses several peptides as part of his daily routine. He keeps vials of GHK-Cu and retatrutide in his refrigerator and uses them in an attempt to improve his skin and control his appetite.

He says he also occasionally uses other peptides, including Selank for anxiety and BPC-157, which is promoted online for its supposed ability to support the repair of soft tissue.

Thomas began experimenting with peptides around six months ago, having previously used steroids. He now incorporates the substances into his fitness routine while spending much of his time at the gym.

Peptides are short chains of amino acids that play important roles in the human body. Some laboratory-produced peptides are also established ingredients in medicines, including insulin and certain GLP-1-based treatments.

However, a growing online market has emerged around synthetic peptides that have not been authorised for these uses. Influencers, fitness communities and wellness personalities frequently promote them as tools for improving muscle growth, skin quality, sleep, mental performance and even slowing ageing.

Medical researchers caution that many of these claims have not been adequately demonstrated through high-quality human studies.

In France, several of the substances promoted online are not authorised for sale or use for the purposes advertised. As a result, consumers may have little reliable guidance about their safety, effectiveness or appropriate use.

Online communities on platforms including Reddit and Discord have also become spaces where users exchange personal experiences and discuss peptide use, often without professional medical supervision.

Thomas believes the potential dangers are relatively limited, but researchers strongly disagree with that assessment.

Armelle Rancillac, a neuroscientist at French research institute INSERM, said scientific understanding of many of these compounds remains incomplete because they have frequently not undergone adequate human testing.

INSERM has warned that large-scale randomised clinical trials have not established many of the benefits claimed for peptides online. Researchers have also cautioned that some products may carry significant health risks.

Rancillac argued that personal accounts of self-experimentation should not be treated as reliable scientific evidence, particularly when users are drawing conclusions from their own experiences rather than controlled clinical research.

Concerns have also emerged internationally. Australian authorities reported six cases of acute liver injury in June associated with products labelled as retatrutide, highlighting potential risks surrounding unapproved peptide products.

The true number of people experimenting with peptides remains difficult to establish. Fabien Ohl, a sports sociologist at the University of Lausanne, said the growing visibility of the trend online was nevertheless enough to raise concern.

Ohl also criticised the increasingly popular idea that the human body should be treated as something that can be chemically optimised for better looks and performance.

Websites marketing peptides often use language centred on achieving maximum biological performance, while self-described online experts offer paid guidance to men seeking to transform their physiques.

According to Ohl, this trend also raises broader questions about modern masculinity and the pressure placed on men to continually improve their bodies through chemical interventions.
