PPP Requests Election Commission for Senate Seat Elections

Islamabad: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has submitted a formal letter to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) urging for elections to fill the vacant Senate seats. The letter, addressed to CEC Sikandar Sultan Raja, specifically calls for elections to be held for eight Senate seats left vacant by political parties following the general elections.

Among those who have resigned from their Senate seats after winning in the general elections are prominent figures such as Yousaf Raza Gilani, Abdul Ghafoor Haideri, Nisar Khuhro, Jam Mahtab, Sarfaraz Bugti, Sadiq Sanjrani, Prince Umar, and Nuzhat Sadiq.

Additionally, the letter highlights the need for an election to fill the seat vacated by the Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar and the late Rana Maqbool, a Senator of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.

Earlier reports indicated that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has scheduled both Senate and presidential elections for March 2024. Sources suggest that polling for the Senate elections is anticipated to take place in the first or second week of March, preceding the presidential elections. The proposed schedule aims to conduct Senate polling before March 10, with the timeline for the presidential election to be finalized following approval from the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and other ECP members.
