Pentagon Chief Assures Israel of U.S. Readiness Against Iranian Threats

Lloyd Austin Reaffirms Commitment to Defend Allies Amid Escalating Tensions

On Tuesday, U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin held a conversation with his Israeli counterpart, following Iran’s missile attack on Israel, which was a response to Israel’s military operations in Lebanon that have led to hundreds of deaths and the displacement of over a million people.

Iran stated that the missile strikes had concluded, barring any further provocations. No injuries were reported in Israel, and U.S. officials characterized Iran’s attack as ineffective.

Both Israel and the U.S. pledged to respond to Tehran amid rising fears of a broader conflict. The Pentagon released a statement noting that Austin reaffirmed the U.S.’s readiness to protect its personnel, allies, and partners against threats from Iran and groups supported by it.

Austin mentioned that he and Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant expressed mutual gratitude for their coordinated efforts to defend Israel against the nearly 200 ballistic missiles launched by Iran and committed to maintaining close communication.

Recently, Israel has escalated its military actions in Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah militants backed by Iran. Additionally, Israel continues its conflict in Gaza, which began after a deadly attack by Hamas militants on October 7.
