Pakistan to ban conventional disposable syringes from 2027

Pakistan bans conventional disposable syringes to curb infectious disease spread

Islamabad: (Web Desk) –  The federal government has decided to ban conventional disposable syringes from January 1, 2027, in an effort to prevent their reuse and curb the spread of HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases.

Under directives issued by the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan, the manufacture, import and sale of conventional non-insulin disposable syringes will become illegal after December 31, 2026.

DRAP has informed manufacturers and importers that only safety-engineered syringes, including auto-lock syringes, will be allowed for sale in the market from the start of 2027.

The decision was taken on the prime minister’s directions and approved by DRAP’s Medical Devices Board. Officials said the policy aims to reduce the risk of disease transmission caused by the reuse of syringes.

Conventional 10cc syringes will remain available under limited conditions for specific procedures at major public and private hospitals. Manufacturers and importers will be required to print the name of the purchasing institution on the packaging.

DRAP will also launch a digital portal to monitor the restricted use of conventional syringes. Secondary and tertiary care hospitals will be required to upload relevant records to the system.
