Pakistan Test Team Called Weakest Squad In 50 Years
British media slams Pakistan's batting, bowling and fielding after heavy Leeds defeat to England
Pakistan Test cricket is facing harsh criticism from British media, who have labelled the current squad touring England as the weakest side to visit the country in five decades. The comments follow a disappointing show in the Leeds Test.
The Daily Telegraph did not hold back. It said no Pakistani player had truly impressed in any department throughout the tour so far.
Pakistan has long been famous for producing world-class fast bowlers and hard-hitting batsmen. But the newspaper noted this current group has fallen far short of that proud history.
Every part of the team’s game has taken heat. Batting, bowling, and fielding have all been called weak points during the series.
In Leeds, Pakistan lost its last eight wickets for just 74 runs. Even on a dry Headingley pitch, the pace attack could not trouble England’s batting lineup in any real way.
Fielding mistakes made things worse. Several dropped catches and misfields let England batters like Joe Root, Harry Brook, and Dan Lawrence score freely and build big innings.
Still, there is a silver lining. Wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan and Pakistan’s two spinners were praised for showing flashes of the fearless, attacking cricket the country is known for.
Former England pacer Stuart Broad also weighed in during a chat with Steven Finn. He called Pakistan a weak team and said England would face major disappointment if they failed to win this series.
This marks Pakistan’s first Test tour of England since 2020, when the hosts won 1-0 with two draws.
Pakistan’s last series win on English soil came back in 1996, under Wasim Akram, completing three straight series victories dating back to 1987.
Across 92 Test meetings, England leads with 30 wins to Pakistan’s 23, with 39 matches drawn.
