Pakistan, China Settle on Donkey Skin Exports, Focus Shifts To Donkey Meat

The meeting also touched upon the recently passed budget, with the Committee Chair acknowledging its challenging nature.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and China have reached an agreement on donkey skin exports, according to the Secretary of Commerce, who addressed the Senate Trade Committee. However, discussions regarding donkey meat exports are still ongoing.

The Secretary clarified that there are currently no restrictions on donkey exports from Pakistan. He also highlighted the presence of donkey farms within the country and the existence of trade officers stationed in 70 countries worldwide.

The news comes amidst plans to expand Pakistan’s trade reach. New trade missions are scheduled to open in Tanzania and Mozambique, with efforts underway to increase coverage in Eastern Europe and establish offices in Singapore and Vietnam.

The Committee Chair, Senator Anusha Rehman, emphasized the need to improve trade performance in Egypt and Vietnam, where India currently holds a dominant market position.

The Secretary also mentioned ongoing bilateral trade with China through the Krumchi border crossing, as well as trade partnerships with Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. He pointed out the significant size of Vietnam’s furniture industry, valued at $40 billion.

Discussions regarding border trade with neighboring countries were also addressed. The Secretary confirmed that a framework for such trade has been created and shared with these nations.

Senator Zeeshan Khanzada raised concerns about the balance of trade, questioning what Pakistan could offer these neighboring countries.

Looking ahead, the Secretary announced an upcoming major trade agreement with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), which is expected to include investment opportunities. Additionally, 12 food-related product protocols have been agreed upon with China.
