Pakistan Celebrates Youm-e-Takbeer: Commemorating 1998 Nuclear achievement

Youm-e-Takbeer serves as a reminder of Pakistan’s unity and determination to thwart any internal or external threats.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan observes Youm-e-Takbeer today (Tuesday), celebrating the historic atomic explosions of 1998 with a renewed pledge to strengthen the nation both economically and militarily. The annual commemoration on May 28 marks Pakistan’s emergence as the world’s seventh nuclear power and the first Islamic state equipped with nuclear weapons.

On this day in 1998, Pakistan conducted nuclear tests in the Rasko Hills of Chaghi district, Balochistan, in response to India’s five nuclear explosions, affirming its commitment to national security. These tests signaled to the world that while Pakistan is a peace-loving country, it remains vigilant and ready to defend itself against any threat.

The journey to nuclear capability began under Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, whose vision of an invincible national defense was realized when Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif defied international pressure to conduct the tests. This milestone was achieved through the unwavering dedication and resolve of the Pakistani leadership and the nation’s scientists, particularly Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan.

The role of President Ziaul Haq in advancing the nuclear program initiated by Bhutto is also recognized, highlighting his significant contributions despite various challenges.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a public holiday on May 28 to honor Youm-e-Takbeer, emphasizing the day’s importance in reinforcing Pakistan’s defense capabilities. In a statement from the PM House, the Prime Minister underscored the nation’s unanimous decision in 1998 to prioritize national integrity and resist external pressures on defense matters.
