Oregon School Shooting in Bend Leaves Four Dead, Two Injured

A 16-year-old gunman was stopped by an armed bystander at Silver Rail Elementary, police say

Oregon School – (Special Correspondent/Web Desk) – A deadly attack at an Oregon school in the city of Bend has left three children and one teacher dead. The shooting happened on Thursday at Silver Rail Elementary School.

Police say the attacker was a 16-year-old from Bend. A local man who saw the teen enter the school followed him inside and shot him. Officers later confirmed the teen was dead.

Police Chief Mike Krantz said the first call came from a person who was shot at by someone with a long gun. Soon after, dozens of calls reported a gunman inside the school.

Officers reached the scene at 1:02 pm, only minutes after the calls. They gave first aid to the victims inside.

The three children who died were aged five, eight and 11. A seven-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher are in critical condition.

Early findings suggest the shooter fired at locked doors to get inside. Chief Krantz said the investigation has only just begun.

The school has about 400 to 450 students and more than 40 staff. Students were taken away by bus, and parents waited at a nearby site to meet them.

Superintendent Steve Cook said the district is heartbroken. He called it an unthinkable tragedy and said such events happen in other places, not here.

All schools in the district will stay closed on Friday. Activities and sports events are also cancelled.

Oregon congresswoman Janelle Bynum spoke out in anger, saying children are being harmed again and again. The gun safety group Giffords also asked the country to stop accepting such violence.
