Opposition’s Joint Declaration Calls for Fresh Elections to Resolve Pakistan’s Crisis

Islamabad – The Tehreek-e-Tahaffuz-e-Ayeen-e-Pakistan (TTAP), a multi-party opposition alliance, concluded its two-day conference in Islamabad with a strong call for fresh and transparent elections as the only solution to the political and economic crises facing Pakistan.

In a joint declaration, the opposition parties emphasized that the country’s deteriorating situation requires a joint strategy and national dialogue to stabilize Pakistan. They held the “rigged” February 8, 2024, general elections responsible for the ongoing crises and stated that the current parliament has no moral, political, or legal standing.

The declaration called for the abolition of amendments that contradict the Constitution, a release of all political prisoners, and the revocation of recent amendments to the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2025. The opposition also demanded that water resources be distributed according to the 1991 water agreement.

The conference included speeches by several prominent political figures, including PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, former senator Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar, and Deputy Emir of Jamaat-e-Islami, Liaqat Baloch. These leaders condemned the government’s actions to suppress dissent, restrict political freedoms, and curtail freedom of speech.

PTI’s Gohar Ali Khan criticized the government for lacking public support and legitimacy, emphasizing the need for judicial independence. Khokhar pledged to continue the movement for constitutional restoration despite government attempts to block the conference.
