OpenAI Announces Public Release of New GPT-5.6 Models
OpenAI Set to Launch GPT-5.6 AI Models Globally Thursday
NEW YORK: (News Desk) – OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has announced that its latest artificial intelligence model series will be released publicly on Thursday, following reports that US authorities approved a broader rollout.
The new GPT-5.6 series, along with other advanced AI systems, has attracted attention over concerns about their powerful ability to identify software vulnerabilities that could potentially be exploited by hackers.
OpenAI said in late June that it had provided limited preview access to GPT-5.6 to a selected group of US-based partners at the request of the US government.
The GPT-5.6 lineup includes three models: Sol, the company’s flagship system; Terra, a mid-range model designed for general workplace tasks; and Luna, a faster and lower-cost version aimed at wider accessibility.
In a post on X, OpenAI announced that GPT-5.6 Sol, along with Terra and Luna, would become publicly available on Thursday, while preview access was being expanded internationally.
According to a report by US news outlet Axios, citing a source familiar with the matter, the Trump administration approved a wider launch of GPT-5.6 after discussions and security evaluations involving OpenAI and government officials.
OpenAI, the White House and the US Department of Commerce were contacted for comments regarding the report.
The development follows a similar move by AI company Anthropic, which recently announced plans to restore global access to some of its most advanced models after US government restrictions on their release locations were lifted.
