New anti-terror law raises fears over free speech rights
New Anti-Terrorism Law Aims to Strengthen Security with Legal Oversight
ISLAMABAD—(Special Correspondent/Web Desk)—President Asif Ali Zardari has signed the new Anti-Terrorism Bill into law. The government says it will help fight terrorism with better legal oversight.
The law allows authorities to detain anyone suspected of threatening national safety. People involved in target killings or kidnappings can be held for up to three months.
The bill states that there must be “sufficient grounds” for holding someone. Detention beyond three months must follow constitutional safeguards.
A joint team will investigate cases where army or civil forces issue a detention order. The team must include a high-ranking police officer.
Officials say the new law is needed due to the current security situation. It offers a stronger response than previous rules.

The opposition party PTI has opposed the bill, fearing it may be used against them.
The bill was passed by both houses of parliament this month despite opposition.
The government assures that the law includes judicial oversight to prevent misuse of power.
A statement from the Presidency said the law aims to improve counterterrorism efforts while protecting legal rights.
It also allows armed forces to detain individuals for three months if they are considered a national threat.
Additionally, a new version of the Minorities Rights Bill has been agreed upon. It was finalized at a meeting at the Presidency and sent back to parliament.
These changes follow a message from the President under the Constitution.
