Veteran Cueist Triumphs in Doha, Matching Pankaj Advani’s Record
Qatar-(Sports Reporter): Pakistan’s seasoned snooker star Muhammad Asif secured his third IBSF World Snooker Championship title with a hard-fought 5-3 victory over Iran’s Ali Ghareghozlou in Doha, Qatar. The 42-year-old, who entered the tournament as a wildcard chosen by the Pakistan Billiards and Snooker Association (PBSA), delivered a series of stellar performances that showcased his skill and experience.
In the championship match, played over nine frames, Asif took an early lead with a 70-25 win in the first frame. Ghareghozlou quickly leveled the match with a strong 94-7 win in the second, but Asif responded by securing the third frame 62-8 and then made an impressive 106-point clearance in the fourth frame, his sixth century break in the tournament, putting him up 3-1.
Riding his momentum, Asif extended his lead with an 82-12 win in the fifth frame. Though Ghareghozlou fought back, taking the sixth and seventh frames, Asif sealed his victory with a powerful 93-point break in the eighth frame, clinching the match 5-3.
This latest achievement elevates Asif’s world title tally to three individual wins, matching the record held by India’s snooker icon Pankaj Advani. In addition to his individual titles in 2012 and 2019, Asif also holds two team world championships, making him Pakistan’s most successful cueist with five world titles overall.
The PBSA, led by Chairman Alamgir Sheikh, celebrated Asif’s triumph as a proud moment for Pakistan. Sheikh expressed optimism that Asif’s latest success would earn him the recognition and support he deserves.
