MOM Art Space Hamburg Hosts ‘Doing Earth’ Exhibition Celebrating Pakistan-Germany Cultural Exchange
Pakistani Women Artists Explore Climate Change and Cultural Identity in Hamburg Exhibition
HAMBURG: (News Desk) – MOM Art Space in Hamburg, Germany, has presented *DOING EARTH*, a group exhibition featuring works by Pakistani women artists as part of *Ecology of Trust*, a German-Pakistani artistic and cultural exchange exploring the relationship between humanity, culture, memory and the environment.
Jointly curated by Dagmar Rauwald and Farrah Mahmood Rana, the exhibition showcased 21 artworks by artists from Pakistan and Iran. The works span miniature painting, drawing, painting, mixed media, objects and film, highlighting diverse artistic perspectives on ecological and climatic change.
The exhibition, held from October 8 to 10 at MOM Art Space, was presented alongside *When the Leaves Speak*, an exhibition by Farrah Mahmood Rana at MARKK Museum am Rothenbaum, Kunst und Kulturen der Welt, in Hamburg.
Titled *DOING EARTH*, the exhibition draws inspiration from philosopher Judith Butler’s concept of performativity, examining how human actions, social relationships and cultural practices continuously shape the world. Through their work, participating artists reflect on memory, identity, belonging, displacement, care, coexistence and environmental transformation.
Co-curator Farrah Mahmood Rana highlighted the evolving role of miniature painting, noting that the art form is no longer restricted to historical subjects or traditional formats. Contemporary miniature artists are increasingly addressing issues such as climate change, ecology, identity, memory and cultural belonging through a visual language that connects artistic heritage with present-day concerns.
The exhibition demonstrates how the intricate techniques of South Asian miniature painting, including fine brushwork, meticulous linework, layered pigments and handmade Wasli paper, can communicate contemporary environmental and social themes. These techniques offer new ways of interpreting landscapes, fragile ecosystems, cultural memory and the complex relationship between people and nature.
For audiences in Germany, *DOING EARTH* also provides an opportunity to explore the depth and contemporary relevance of South Asian miniature painting, presenting traditional artistic knowledge in dialogue with pressing global challenges.
Conceived as an artist-curated initiative, *Ecology of Trust* aims to strengthen cultural connections between Pakistan and Germany by bringing diverse perspectives and lived experiences into conversation. The project positions art as a platform for cross-cultural understanding, reflection and collective awareness of humanity’s shared responsibility towards the Earth.
The exhibition invites audiences to reconsider their relationship with nature and the landscapes they inhabit, raising questions about not only the world inherited from previous generations but also the world being shaped through everyday actions, cultural practices and collective choices.
Participating artists include Amna Hashmi, Farida Fatima, Farrah Mahmood Rana, Suriyya Choudhary, Samreen Rehman, Ufaq Ehsan and Sara Rahanjam.
Through its combination of traditional techniques and contemporary artistic approaches, *DOING EARTH* underscores the potential of cultural exchange to connect communities and encourage wider conversations about ecological responsibility and a shared environmental future.
