Meloni condemns AI deepfake images targeting leaders online

Italian PM Meloni warns against harmful AI deepfakes online use

Malborne: (Web Desk) – Giorgia Meloni has strongly criticized the circulation of fake, sexually manipulated images created using deepfake technology, describing it as a serious and harmful digital threat. The Italian Prime Minister shared one such AI-generated image on her social media, which had been spreading online in recent days and falsely depicted her in inappropriate attire.

Meloni commented with irony that the creator had at least made her look “better than reality,” but stressed that the issue goes far beyond personal embarrassment. She warned that deepfakes can mislead public opinion, distort reality, and be used to deliberately target individuals, especially women in public life. She added that while she has the means to respond and defend herself, many ordinary people do not have the same protection.

She urged users to verify content before believing or sharing it, emphasizing that misinformation can escalate quickly once it spreads online. The post also included a reaction from a social media user who had believed the fake image and criticized her based on it, highlighting how easily such content can deceive audiences.

Similar manipulated and sexualized images of Meloni have appeared in the past, including on adult websites, prompting legal and political responses. Italy has since strengthened laws to address harmful deepfake content, especially when it causes unjust damage to personal reputation. In a previous case, Meloni also pursued legal action against individuals responsible for creating and distributing fake videos of her on foreign platforms.

The growing use of AI-generated explicit or misleading content has raised wider concerns globally, as female politicians and public figures increasingly become targets of such digital manipulation.
