Maryam Nawaz Plans Lahore as Pakistan’s First Smart City with Huawei

Beijing: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has unveiled ambitious plans to transform Lahore into Pakistan’s first state-of-the-art smart city through a partnership with Huawei Technologies. During the fourth day of her official visit to China, CM Maryam visited Huawei’s headquarters in Shanghai’s Longgang District, where she received a warm reception and engaged in detailed discussions with company officials.

The meeting focused on exploring avenues for modernizing Lahore into a digital city, with a particular emphasis on e-commerce, healthcare, education, and government services. CM Maryam invited Huawei to expand its investment in Pakistan, especially in Punjab, and offered full cooperation in setting up offices at the Nawaz Sharif IT City. She also proposed the establishment of assembly and manufacturing plants in the province, as well as retail offices and after-sales service centers across Punjab.

In her meeting with Huawei’s President of Government Affairs, Wang Chengdong, the Chief Minister emphasized the importance of collaboration between Punjab and Huawei to bring the vision of “Digital Punjab” to life. She expressed keen interest in Huawei’s ongoing projects in the province, particularly in the health and education sectors, and highlighted the success of the Safe City initiative in Lahore, which was developed in partnership with the tech giant.

CM Maryam noted that Huawei’s expertise in telecommunications, electronics, and digital technologies would be instrumental in launching the province’s first AI university and supporting IT research at Nawaz Sharif IT City. She also stressed the need for Huawei’s assistance in capacity building and ecosystem development, aimed at equipping Punjab’s youth with the skills needed for the digital age.

During her visit, the Chief Minister toured various Huawei facilities, including the company’s factory, and discussed further opportunities for collaboration, particularly in the fields of innovation and technology-driven governance.

The partnership with Huawei is expected to propel Punjab towards a smarter, more connected future, positioning Lahore as a leading digital hub in the region.
