LHC Rejects Sheikh Rashid’s Plea for Acquittal in May 9 GHQ Attack Case

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday rejected the acquittal plea filed by former interior minister Sheikh Rashid in connection with the May 9 attack on the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi.

A two-member bench, led by Justice Mirza Waqas Rauf, issued the written ruling, upholding the decision of the trial court which had previously dismissed Rashid’s request for acquittal. The court noted that Rashid had argued he was politically implicated in the case, while the prosecution maintained that police had named him based on the statements of co-accused.

Rashid’s defence team had sought acquittal at the preliminary stage, claiming there was no possibility of a conviction. However, the court observed that the trial had not yet commenced and no witnesses had been heard. In its written order, the court emphasized that acquittal decisions could only be made after reviewing witness testimony and evidence.

The court further stated that Rashid could file a fresh acquittal plea once the trial was underway and witnesses were recorded. The case, registered by the RA Bazaar police station, relates to the attack on the GHQ on May 9.
