Kostyuk Clay Court Winning Streak Fuels French Open Chaos as Swiatek Crumbles, Zverev Cruises
Kostyuk Clay Court Winning Streak Reaches 15 as She Ends Swiatek's French Open Dream
PARIS – (Web Desk) – Marta Kostyuk’s clay court winning streak hit 15 matches after she pulled off one of the biggest upsets of this year’s French Open. The 15th seed beat three-time defending champion Iga Swiatek 7-5, 6-1 on Sunday — and to make it even more dramatic, it happened on Swiatek’s 25th birthday.
Swiatek started the match well and even broke serve in the first set. But things quickly fell apart. She lost the first set 7-5 and then completely collapsed in the second, failing to hold serve even once as Kostyuk cruised to a dominant win.
“I’m still in shock,” Kostyuk said after the match. She added that she just wanted to enjoy the day and connect with the crowd — and that attitude clearly worked in her favour.
This result means Roland Garros will have a brand new women’s champion in 2026. With Swiatek, Coco Gauff, and Elena Rybakina all gone, world number one Aryna Sabalenka now looks the strongest favourite left in the draw.
Kostyuk will next face fellow Ukrainian Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals, setting up an all-Ukrainian clash that has already captured the attention of tennis fans worldwide.
For Swiatek, this is her earliest exit at Roland Garros since 2019. She now heads to Wimbledon to defend her title there, but questions about her form and confidence will follow her off the clay.
