Karachi BRT Collapse: Duty Guard Dies Near Baitul Mukarram Mosque

Rescue 1122 says the man was working at the site when part of an unfinished bridge came down in Gulshan-e-Iqbal.

Karachi – (Staff Reporter/Web Desk) – A Karachi BRT collapse has taken the life of a man near Baitul Mukarram Mosque in Gulshan-e-Iqbal. The accident happened on Thursday, when part of an unfinished bridge fell down.

Rescue 1122 said the victim was a duty guard at the construction site. He was trapped under the debris when the structure came down.

Rescue teams reached the spot quickly and began an operation. After removing the rubble, they recovered his body.

Officials said the operation is now over. They added that no other person was injured or stuck under the debris.

Rescue authorities said the fallen structure belonged to the Bus Rapid Transit project. They did not explain what caused the collapse. For now, the reason remains unknown.

A Project Already Under Pressure

This incident comes while the Red Line BRT project is already facing heavy criticism. The work has been slow for years.

The project started in 2022 with a 30-month target. It was meant to be ready by June 2024, but that date has long gone.

The project has two sections. Lot 1 covers Airport signal to Mosamiyat. Lot 2 covers Mosamiyat to Numaish, and it has faced the biggest problems.

Last year, work on Lot 2 stopped for long periods because of money disputes between the contractor and the authorities. Payments were cleared only after the court stepped in.

Later, the authorities ended the old contractor’s contract. They pointed to constant delays and weak performance.

In April, the Frontier Works Organisation, or FWO, restarted work along University Road.

Questions About Safety

The Asian Development Bank, which is part of the project, has also shown concern. According to Geo News, it spoke about the pace and quality of work, as well as health, safety and environmental rules.

The Karachi BRT collapse has now added to those worries. People will ask whether workers and guards at such sites are properly protected.

A project like this is meant to make travel easier. Instead, many residents have faced blocked routes and heavy traffic for a long time.

The guard’s death is a sad reminder that construction sites can be dangerous. Clear answers about the cause are important, especially for his family.
