JUI-F issues December 8 deadline for Madrasah Registration Bill passage

ISLAMABAD: The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) has given the federal government an ultimatum, demanding that the Madrasah Registration Bill be passed by December 8. The party’s warning comes after President Asif Zardari rejected the bill, sending it back to the government with objections. A special session of the National Assembly is expected next week to resolve the issue.

JUI-F spokesperson Aslam Ghouri stated that the party had been informed of international pressure against the registration of religious seminaries (madrasahs), which has contributed to the growing tensions surrounding the bill. In a recent meeting, JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman voiced his concerns about the President’s veto to Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).

Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri, a senior JUI-F leader, issued a strong warning, saying that if the government does not pass the bill by the set deadline, the party will take to the streets and march on Islamabad. He emphasized the party’s preference for a peaceful resolution but made it clear that they were serious about their demands. Haideri also mentioned that assurances had been given by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari for the passage of the bill.

The situation escalated further when Hafiz Hamdullah, another JUI-F leader, condemned the President’s rejection of the bill as a “declaration of war” and a “slap in the face of parliament.” Hamdullah also questioned whether the President’s actions were intended to create difficulties for the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government, holding the President, Prime Minister, and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari responsible for the bill’s rejection.

With the December 8th deadline fast approaching, the political standoff continues to intensify, leaving the federal government with little time to address the JUI-F’s demands.
