Ceasefire Deal Reached Ahead of Trump's Inauguration with U.S. Diplomacy Key
GAZA: Israel and Hamas have reached a ceasefire agreement aimed at ending the 15-month-long Gaza conflict, marking a potential turning point after a devastating war that has claimed tens of thousands of lives. The deal, brokered with the help of Egyptian and Qatari mediators and backed by the United States, includes a provision for the exchange of Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners, bringing an end to a bitter cycle of violence that has engulfed the region.
The conflict began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas-led militants breached Israeli security barriers, launching a deadly attack on Israeli communities that resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 people and the abduction of more than 250 hostages. In retaliation, Israel’s military launched a full-scale invasion of Gaza, resulting in significant casualties. According to Gaza health ministry figures, over 46,000 Palestinians have lost their lives in the ensuing violence, with Gaza’s infrastructure decimated and many residents left homeless in the harsh winter conditions.
The ceasefire deal comes at a pivotal moment, just days before the inauguration of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump. Trump, who had repeatedly called for a swift resolution to the conflict, emphasized the urgency of the hostage situation, warning of dire consequences if they were not returned. His Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, worked alongside President Joe Biden’s administration to finalize the deal.

This ceasefire is seen as a step towards de-escalation in the region, though it remains to be seen whether it will hold.
