Iranian Foreign Minister Meets Army Chief in Islamabad Amid Ongoing Diplomacy
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met Field Marshal Asim Munir, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces, in Islamabad following his return from Oman, where he held high-level diplomatic discussions.
His visit comes at a sensitive time as Pakistan continues efforts to facilitate dialogue between Iran and the United States, despite U.S. President Donald Trump cancelling a planned visit by his envoys to Islamabad.
Araghchi arrived after talks in Oman with Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, focusing on regional security in the Strait of Hormuz and diplomatic initiatives aimed at reducing tensions between Tehran and Washington. During his second visit to Pakistan within two days, he is expected to engage with top civilian and military leadership. Iranian media reports suggest he is carrying Tehran’s perspective on a potential framework for a lasting settlement.
Prior to his Oman trip, Araghchi had already met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, and Field Marshal Asim Munir in Islamabad.
Meanwhile, Washington had planned to send peace envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner for further discussions, but the visit was later cancelled by President Trump, who cited a lack of meaningful progress. However, he indicated that Iran submitted a revised proposal shortly after, suggesting diplomatic engagement is still ongoing.
Araghchi described his earlier visit to Pakistan as “very fruitful,” while also expressing caution regarding U.S. intentions, noting that it remains unclear whether Washington is fully committed to diplomacy.
Following his engagements in Islamabad, the Iranian foreign minister is expected to continue his regional tour with a visit to Russia for further consultations.
