Iran Summons German Ambassador in Tit-for-Tat Diplomatic Move
Iran-Germany Tensions Rise Over Alleged Assassination Plot
TEHRAN: (News Desk) – Iran on Monday summoned German Ambassador Axel Dittmann in response to Berlin’s decision to summon the Iranian ambassador over allegations that Tehran was involved in a plot to assassinate pro-Israel public figures in Germany.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry accused Germany of making “baseless political allegations” against the Islamic Republic, according to a statement carried by Iran’s official news agency IRNA.
The ministry said security-related accusations against Iran had long been used by Israel and certain Western countries. It also argued that attempts to give judicial legitimacy to what it described as politically motivated claims would undermine the credibility of Germany’s judiciary.
The diplomatic dispute follows a ruling by a Hamburg court on Thursday convicting two men of planning attacks against prominent figures in Germany’s Jewish community. The intended targets were the president of Germany’s main Jewish community organisation and the head of the German-Israeli Society.
A Danish national, partially identified as Ali Hassan S., was sentenced to eight and a half years in prison, while an Afghan national who was recruited as his accomplice received a four-and-a-half-year sentence.
The two men were arrested in Denmark last year and later extradited to Germany. During sentencing, the judge said the men had been involved in terrorist activities orchestrated by Iran.
Germany’s Foreign Ministry said the Iranian ambassador had been summoned over the allegations, stressing that the country would not tolerate threats against its free society.
“The malicious assassination attempts will have legal consequences,” the ministry said, adding that Germany would not tolerate attacks on Jewish people or those defending Jewish communities.
Iran’s embassy in Berlin had previously rejected the allegations when the two men were charged, describing them as unfounded claims made at the behest of Iran’s adversaries.
The latest exchange of diplomatic summonses highlights growing tensions between Tehran and Berlin over allegations of Iranian involvement in security threats on German soil.
